Used Toyota 4Runner Buying Guide

Published on Aug 15, 2026 by St. Pete Mitsubishi

The 4Runner has spent decades doing something few SUVs can claim—it's stayed true to its original mission. If you're shopping used, find how the latest two generations compare in this Toyota 4Runner review.

Key Takeaways

  • The sixth-generation 4Runner introduced turbocharged and hybrid powertrains.
  • Fifth-generation models are far easier to find on the used market thanks to their lengthy 15-year production run.
  • Buyers looking for the latest in tech should focus on 2020-2024 fifth-generation models.

How Did Toyota Change the Sixth-Generation 4Runner?

Toyota gave the 4Runner its first major redesign in 2025. It now rides on Toyota's TNGA-F platform, which it shares with several of the brand's trucks and larger SUVs.
The long-running V6 was replaced by a 278-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder cranking out 317 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can also opt for the 326 hp i-Force Max hybrid, which boosts output to 465 lb-ft, making it the most powerful 4Runner Toyota has ever offered. Every engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic.

Toyota also broadened the trim lineup with the Platinum for a more upscale experience and the TRD or Trailhunter for off-road enthusiasts. Trailhunter models feature 33-inch all-terrain tires, Old Man Emu suspension components, skid plates, a high-mounted air intake, and integrated auxiliary lighting.

Inside, Toyota added a faster infotainment system with improved voice recognition and a larger touchscreen. Blind-spot monitoring, a tow hitch receiver, and the signature power rear window are standard. Buyers who need extra passenger space can still find third-row seating on non-hybrid models.

Because we're still at the earlier end of the sixth generation, used inventory remains fairly limited, and pricing is close to that of new models.

How Did the Fifth-Generation 4Runner Improve Over Time?

The fifth-gen 4Runner was in production for 15 model years, giving Toyota plenty of opportunities to refine the SUV without changing its core personality.

Early models were available with either a 2.7-liter four-cylinder or a 4.0-liter V6, although Toyota dropped the four-cylinder after the 2013 model year. From that point on, the V6 became the only engine choice.

In 2015, the TRD Pro joined the lineup with an upgraded suspension and skid plates. Two years later, the Trail models became the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium. Buyers wanting a darker appearance gained yet another option in 2019 with the addition of the Nightshade Edition.

Technology improved steadily as well. The 2014 refresh brought a redesigned dashboard and updated interior. For 2020, Toyota made one of the generation's biggest technology leaps by adding Toyota Safety Sense-P as standard equipment, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, a larger touchscreen, and additional USB ports. Later model years also introduced push-button start and passive entry, while Limited models gained a 360-degree camera and the TRD Pro received a Multi-Terrain Monitor.

Which Fifth-Generation Models Are Worth Shopping For?

One advantage of the fifth generation's lengthy production run is the variety available on the used market. Buyers can find everything from affordable, higher-mileage early models to well-preserved TRD Pros that still command premium prices. 2020-2024 models are especially appealing because they include Toyota's biggest infotainment and safety upgrades.

Generation Highlights Watch Out For Best Years
6th (2025-Present) TNGA-F platform, 278-hp turbo or 326-hp i-Force Max hybrid, 8-speed automatic transmission, Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter trims added, upgraded infotainment and standard blind-spot monitoring. Used inventory is limited so prices are close to current MSRP. Third-row seating available only on non-hybrid models. 2025-Present
5th (2010-2024) 4.0L V6 (2014+), TRD Pro (2015), TRD Off-Road (2017), Nightshade (2019), Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Toyota Safety Sense-P added with 2020 models. Early four-cylinder models are less desirable and lack the tech found in 2020-2024 models. TRD Pro versions continue to command top prices. 2020-2024, 2014-2019
